On The Bench (A Captain’s Words For A Future Star) (For Leanne Ross)

I think my latest poem on women’s football shows my gentler side and more importantly I hope it shows the softer side of Glasgow City captain and icon and former Scotland star Leanne Ross. In it I attempt to look at a situation which only a real leader can handle and that’s when a younger player makes the first team squad and gets a place on the bench but doesn’t get on the park as she had hoped for. Now regardless of whether it’s the men’s or women’s game I don’t think there’s a player who hasn’t been in this position and been gutted that they didn’t get game time. I’ve given it the title On The Bench (A Captain’s Words For A Future Star) I hope you enjoy the read.

On The Bench (A Captain’s Words For A Future Star)

on the bench, she is deep in thought.
watching the players and studying tactical formation.
impatient, she sits waiting for her chance.
It’s her first time in the first team pool.
nervous, she tries to play it cool
as she watches intently.
the players were all friendly
to the new girl in the squad.
but none will want to be the one taken off
to allow her the game time she needs.
she has a good turn of speed
can play anywhere in the forward line or midfield.
but this, is not her time.
her chance to shine will come later.
she’s almost ready, but not quite yet.
eventually, the game ends.
without her taking the place she wanted.
disappointed her smile disappears
till the captain sees her look.
walks with her, to the dressing room,
and says. it was always
going to be tough tonight.
we needed older heads
who were prepared for the fight.
we couldn’t risk you getting hurt.
you were brought along
for different reasons .
to be given a taste of seasons yet to come .
when you’ll be the one
whose the bigger name.
and a younger player,
sad that she never got a game.
is given the same chat
we’re having.
and then makes a name for herself
on the day she is given her jersey.
and no longer on the bench
she shows the world her skills.
like you will in future seasons.

Gratitude List (For Sam Kerr)

This poem is dedicated to the young Glasgow City footballer Sam Kerr who inspired me by doing something special one friday night without even knowing she done it. In her tweet on self care Sam made what was in my opinion without doubt the most intelligent and creative comment I’ve heard in the whole of lockdown. This was a comment which had a very beneficial impact on my mental health as it really changed my way of thinking. In that tweet Sam said we should make lists of the things we’re grateful for each day because we all have for things to be grateful for so before I forget here’s some of the things and people I’m grateful for and one of them in case you haven’t guessed is Sam Kerr. I’ve titled the poem Gratitude List I hope you enjoy the read

Gratitude List (For Sam Kerr)

Im grateful for my health
I’m grateful for my friends
I’m grateful for not needing to pretend
about who I actually am
I’m grateful to be able to express myself
in verse and in rhyme
in whatever place and time I see fit
I’m grateful that people listen to my words when I’m on stage
I’m grateful for the ability to rage
or to speak gentler words of kindness and hopefully compassion
I’m grateful for mistakes I’ve made that I’ve had the nerve to call fashion
I’m grateful for being allowed to live in a country
which at least in part cares for its citizens
I’m grateful for the ambitions I’ve fulfilled and those I’ve yet to achieve
I’m grateful for the faith I actually do believe in
though it can be shaken from time to time
I’m even grateful for the security I get
when my flatmate is watching those American TV crime dramas
so beloved by her that drive me demented
I’m grateful for the fact that this leaves her contented
when I’m out at Celtic Connections
seeing friends I’ve known for years
I’m grateful for my smiles
I’m grateful for my tears
as I said I’ve lot of things to be grateful for
and one of them is you Sam
you see you made think in a different way
I think what I’m trying to say is
that tweet you posted will have sown a lot of seeds in people’s hearts .
now as I sit in my flat I’m looking back with thanks
as I recall the Friday night
you got me thinking about writing gratitude lists
to remember the places and friends
we so often take for granted or at least we did
before this nightmare made us thankful for the good times
we hope we will enjoy again when things return to normality

Match Report

On the first day of the 2020 women’s football league season I kick it off with this poem which was written in the aftermath of the game between Celtic And Glasgow City in which Celtic won 2-1 defeating the defending champions with a last minute winner from Kelly Clark. I’ve given it the title Match Report I hope you enjoy the read

Match Report

It was a hard one last night
Celtic played well and probably deserved to shade it
defeat is not something we take well
the conditions were hellish
and didn’t suit our style
it looked wild out there
I was glad for the comfort of my living room
for the warmth and the shelter
It provided
as both sides gave their all
we never got the break of ball
Sarah’s equaliser just after Claire’s goal summed up a night
when things didn’t go right
no matter how hard you tried
and Kelly’s winner was typical Celtic
the type of goal I cheer
when the men’s side score it
to win a game right at the death
I think in a tough away game
I’d have settled for a draw
before kicked off
but I know you wouldn’t
it’s not in your nature
the winning mentality you have
has made you the players you are
the stars who got me hooked
on a game
for which I’ve developed a passion
so if you remember nothing else
from this match report
just remember that come the end of the season
you’ll still be champions in my eyes

Pre Season Dreams (For Glasgow City)

As the 2020 Women’s football season prepares to kick off. This poem is written in a voice of a player on attending their first training session after the winter break. Though I’ve written it in a way which could apply to any team, it’s probably easy to see that it’s really Glasgow City, I’m talking about, as the player expresses their hopes for the coming season. I’ve titled it Pre Season Dreams I hope you enjoy the read.

Pre Season Dreams

It’s good to be back in training
though some are complaining
about the weather
it’s nice to see the girls
have a blether about the festive season
and what we got from Santa
some of the banter is shocking
and certain players just can’t stop talking
about their new year health and fitness routines
eventually we share pre season dreams
staying injury free is on most of our lists
maybe a Scotland call up for the younger players
or a first team jersey for our development girls
the boss asks if we’re ready to take on the world
and she who shall remain nameless
says of course
without thinking twice
the rest of us smile and think.
the cold air has gone to her head
was she fed too much turkey
for Christmas dinner
we talk to the young team
about what makes a winner
explain that the A game
means ability and attitude
platitudes in the press are all very well
but the road to hell is paved
with yesterday’s fish and chip wrappers
that once sang your praises
to those who bothered to read
reports of our games
fame doesn’t come easy
even if your going for a treble
or 14th successive title
we know how vital team spirit will be
to get us over the line
on days when we think
nothing will ever go right
or big European nights
when going the extra mile
will definitely be required
but as soon we start
our first session back we realise
the desire is still there
the hunger is still there
the unbreakable bond is still there
which is why we are here
on a freezing cold night
training under the floodlights
as we plan for the season ahead
and how to fulfill the pre season dreams
we share when we pull on that jersey.

The Feminine Way

This poem is written on the subject of femininity and explains how it was and is used in ways to make women submissive. Veiwing the topic from a slightly different angle I look at how the idea of femininity has changed over the time and what used to be a chain to bind the majority of women to the patriarchal system can now be our most powerful weapon against it. I’ve given it the title The Feminine Way I hope you enjoy the read.

The Feminine Way

From our earliest years

we are conditioned to be nice

we are taught to be ladylike

not to get in to fights

we are told what to think

what to do what to say

for years we’ve been socialised

in a feminine way

now times have changed

and we girls have it all

we’re the bosses at work

and we’re belles of the ball

we have different kinds of pressures

from the ones our mum’s faced

but we still have to cope

in a feminine way

though the feminine we know

has evolved through the years

as we recognise all

of our dreams and our fears

aspiring to be the best woman we can

in a world very different

to our mum’s and our grans

the certainties they had

in their generations

meant most accepted

a lot of frustration

with dreams put on hold

and career glass ceilings

I can only imagine

how they must have been feeling

but now we have chances

to live and be free

as our suffragette sisters

demanded we be

so lets say it with passion

with pride and ambition

to be feminine now

does not mean submission
